wax transfer on paper

20 × 15 in (50.8 × 38.1 cm)

The two endleaf works in this exhibition make reference to Grolier’s New Book of Knowledge, an extensive childrens’ encyclopedia with many annual editions. An oblong shape implying the flattened form of a globe repeats across the page, entering at the left edge. The form is first gouged into the paper, followed by a carbon transfer that reveals this texture. A wax layer is then transferred, melted by ironing dressmaker’s paper over this surface. Additional strips of transferred wax suggest fragmented meridian lines. As in many of Quevedo’s works, the dimensions of endleaf 2 are defined by the pre-set measurements of the sheet of paper being used—here stacked to create a staggered vertical form made up of two horizontal rectangles.
