"U.S. Border Patrol agents found 33 undocumented migrants hidden inside a trailer during a stop at the Interstate 19 immigration checkpoint north of Nogales Tuesday night, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The 37-year-old Mexican driver, who drove a 2002 Freightliner tractor-trailer, was arrested on suspicion of felony human smuggling, CBP officials said. The migrants inside the trailer were processed for immigration violations, according to CBP.
The truck and the refrigerated trailer was stopped for a secondary inspection and questioning by Nogales sector Border Patrol agents. During the search, agents found the trailer filled with produce from Mexico as well as 33 undocumented migrants from Mexico and El Salvador. Twelve of them were children ranging from 3 to 17. One female was pregnant, and another person was a convicted felon, CBP said.
The inside of the trailer was nearly 100 degrees because the refrigeration unit was turned off, which was dangerous for the people inside, according to CBP."
